Figures 1-18 and 1-19 shows a comparison between an old washed out deck and a freshly re-stained deck.
It is not only important to make your deck look great, but also to help it last long by staining it when it’s turned gray and before it rots your wood. If you choose to waterproof your deck, it is essential that it gets done right, not only for the purpose of preventing the deck from rotting, but also from keeping the rot spreading to the walls of your house.
For this homeowner we used Westcoat’s ALX system.  By combining the sheet membrane, also known as seal guard, with 2.5 galvanized metal laths and high polymer content, cracking and leaking is virtually eliminated, and in turn you get better protection against rain, snow and occasional spills. ALX offers strength without the added weight; the finished product weighs approximately 2.5 pounds per square foot.
